Saturday 17th February 2024 - what a desperately sad evening as the news filtered through, with my TV screen becoming increasingly hazy, through misty eyes.
Somewhat impossible to attempt a fitting tribute to the the Great Man, you would quickly run out of superlatives.
The quite outstanding stats of his career at Glos are well documented, and evoke so many crystal clear memories of excitement, hat-tricks and wonderful centuries. This was a golden era of county cricket, with a sprinkling of world class stars around the county circuit together with many test cricket standard opponents.
The young man from South Africa was quickly adopted as one of our us, and it simply became a long term reciprocated love affair. We absolutely loved his attitude, durability, uniqueness and total loyalty. Our gladiator, with whom we thought we could take on anyone.
When Proc held centre stage, you could guarantee that the bar staff at the County Ground would be temporarily unemployed, and that the many punters in the club tents at the Festival would be transfixed and shouting themselves hoarse as they roared on Proc.
In my cricketing lifetime, I have seen a number of excellent cricketers representing my beloved county. However, to my mind only two players belong to the legendary status (Proc and Courtney). What a wonderful photo of the pair of them together beaming towards the camera at last year's Festival.
Anyway, Proc has always been my all-time cricketing hero. Coinciding with my footloose and fancy free (money in the pocket) days. Proc was a huge part of my life in those days, generating huge excitement and anticipation.
R.I.P Proc and thanks for all those wonderful memories.
