At 161 for 6, could l look forward to a relaxed Sunday afternoon tea (probably deserved after the follow-on target agony). But no, collapso cricket takes us quickly to 161 for 9 and the quite inevitable defeat.
What nail biting anxiety, as somehow Josh Shaw and Dom Goodman survive 17 overs (73 minutes) of frantic pressure. Quite amazing effort and great bottle shown by both of them.
Dom Goodman (our most economical bowler in the match) has now faced 105 balls in his 3 innings, and has yet to be dismissed. Somehow don't expect him to remain batting at No 11 in the future.
Interesting observation from Liam Dawson - "A very strange pitch. Would suddenly start to spin and then quickly return to being lifeless".
A few comments pinched from the Hants supporters ( Hampshire Cricket History/Forum):
"Very odd pitch - spurts of wickets - then suddenly lifeless. Poor batting or good bowling or was the pitch peculiarity down to liquid seaweed treatment".
"I do think that we bowled pretty well, but the story is that we asked for a different surface from the Middlesex game - maybe it backfired, not just at the end but also the length of time we batted".
From their Statto corner: "In the County Championship, Hants have enforced the follow-on 133 times, with 88 subsequent victories (and only lost twice). The last time the follow-on target was just one run short was in 1995 v Glamorgan. The only other time was in 1951 against Gloucestershire - match drawn!!!".
So there you have it folks. History was always on our side! Anyway, I can't help constantly looking at the current league table.
