Come on folks! Hands up for anyone brave enough to have predicted a victory in our opening fixture.
Pre-match, pessimistic me rather thought that a draw would be the best that we could realistically expect.
Anyway, massive congratulations to Glos. With virtually everyone chipping in at various times, it was an excellent collective team effort.
A few random thoughts:
1. With an opening first innings partnership of 139, you know that you are actually dreaming.
2. A fairly typical Bristol wicket - batting gradually getting easier as the match progressed. Winning the toss gave us a massive advantage.
3. Great credit to the bowlers who somehow managed to overcome the handicap of losing Shaw for the second innings effort. Must be some tired limbs this morning.
4. Champagne moment: Matt Taylor removing Amla for a duck in their second innings.
5. Burns, Stoneman, Amla, Pope, Foakes - surely the strongest top 5 that any county put out for the first match of the season. (In stark contrast to their bowling attack!).
6. Quite amazed to see that Reece Topley played. Really thought fitness/injury concerns meant that he was unable to commit to the rigours of 4 day cricket.
7. Man of the match: Chris Dent gets my vote, 169 runs (for once out), leading from the front with some excellent positive cricket.
Final thought. With Brathwaite and Worrall to come, it should really help us to remain competitive.

I think our side is strong:
Dent Braithwaite Bracey Lace Van Buuren Higgins
That's a very good top 6.
Payne Taylor Shaw Worrall
That's a very good bottom 4 (bowling attack).
Stick in one of Smith/Howell/Scott/Charlesworth at 7 depending on the deck and this side can compete.

Found myself nodding in agreement to the vast majority of the above post.
Jared Warner to be added to the additional group, to help cover injuries to the pace bowlers (although think that he is actually presently injured, as he is not featuring in our current Second Eleven match).
Based on our first two matches, the current selection policy favours 3 outright bowlers plus Ryan Higgins as a frontline opening bowler. Supplemented by overs from Scott and GvB.
Of course with hindsight, the great surprise (to me anyway) was the selection of Dom Goodman, who can feel rightly proud of his debut against Somerset. When he signed his professional contract (early 2020) he was described as an all rounder, so will be very interesting to see how his career progresses.
Anyway, suffice to say, really promising to have a number of selection options.
