With time on my hands, I thought I would see if I could come up with some constructive suggestions in order to address my concerns regarding finances and apathy. As background, I have:
- Reviewed the latest availed accounts (2017 season).
- Trawled around a few other counties for ideas.
- Focused on Bristol (non-T20) attendances.
- Protected squad salary costs. (Future wise, you could argue for some white ball only contracts).
Accordingly, I have come up with my 10 Point Action Plan for next season:
1. FINANCE
From the latest published accounts, there seems to be need for significant savings on expenditure.
Would propose a 10% saving on a £825k Facilities budget - probably meaning a reduced headcount (sorry!)
Marketing costs of £335k swallowed up the vast majority of our total gate income for that season. I would suggest that a £150k marketing budget would give a more cost effective and targeted approach.
The above would lead to enormous savings of around £265k. I
2. EXECUTIVE BOARD
Enhance cricketing expertise/knowledge by incorporating 3 ex players.
3. "TARGET ONE THOUSAND" (Full Membership Campaign)
Arrest dwindling full membership and target modest but achievable increase.
Engage existing members to actively seek and promote. Each new member nominated by existing member to get half price first year membership.
4. OFFER WIDER RANGE OF MEMBERSHIP
E.g Husband and Wife, Exile, "6 Pack" membership.
5. ENHANCE MEMBERSHIP VALUE
Guest vouchers for RLC and CC (Bristol) - how many?
6. BOGOF OFFERS
Buy one ticket, get one free promotions.
7. CLUB GLOS
Enhance support and links with local cricket clubs.
For affiliated cricket clubs, make available 20 free RLC vouchers and 20 CC (Bristol) vouchers.
Additionally, select a home match for a nominated " Club Day". To include finals (during lunch) of a simple county wide skills competition (e.g bowling at a single stump).
Across Gloucestershire, we presently have 41 cricket clubs with accredited Clubmark status.
8. COMMUNICATION
Revamped official website re-focused on the cricket activities of our club (include Second Eleven, Academy news etc).
9. BRISTOL CRICKET WEEK
Make one specific week special and unique.
10. PRE SEASON OPEN DAY
Meet the players / photos / see the facilities / skill based sports challenges.
Non of the above would necessarily make us more successful on the pitch. However, it might help to re-energise the club and provide Improved financial foundations.
