Well, after that abject failure yesterday and a few games before too GCCC's season is effectively over. Need to blood potential youngsters [have we any?] and wave goodbye to several. Elsewhere [on facebook] it has been suggested that our recruitment and bringing on academy youngsters has faltered somewhat over the past couple of years; perhaps focussing on the ground, floodlights [an eyeysore Bristol skyline wise....!] rather than the squad. Membership and 'punters' will only come in if they believe the team is worth watching; currently that is not the case. Why the decline and why is our team selection so wayward? Perhaps a rather drastic change is needed and recovery over the next couple of years ?? The poor and slow for news GCCC website doesn't help either..........

Quite clear to see where it all went wrong in the T20...our batting. Klinger has carried our batting in all forms for a number of years now almost single handily. Without his runs this year we have been ruthlessly exposed. In the current T20 averages we have three bowlers in the top 12 and only one batsmen (Bancroft) in the top 50!!
Selection has been strange in all formats too. We consistently went into each T20 game a batsman light. Chris Dent is currently averaging 50 in the championship and averaged 38 in the T20 last year which is currently higher than anyone this year (including Klinger and Bancroft) - but despite batting failure after batting failure couldn't get a game. Tom Smith has been selected on a number of occasions and didn't bowl a single ball. Matt Taylor was superb last year taking 15 wickets at 21 but has been a shadow of himself with 6 wickets at 43 this year. I can only assume that one of our various coaches have been working with him?? It wasn't until last night that Craig Miles finally got a chance. We seemed to have a distinct line between limited overs and championship players. Fine with a big squad or when things are going right. Cockbain, Howell, Smith, Matt Taylor are seen as T20 only, while Norwell, Miles, Dent, Roderick are seen as championship players. K N-B seems to make every team regardless. I can count on one hand the number of occasions he has contributed anything to the team in three years. Yet he makes the team in all three formats?!?
We still have a strong nucleus of young players to build a solid foundation for the future but with Mustard and Klinger at the end of their careers its time for that talented group to step up and with maybe a decent signing or two (we never replaced Marshall) the future could be bright!
